Moving Forward Update #17

by Fr. Bill Van Oss

Dear Friends,

How good it was to be together yesterday in a marvelous spirit of music, scripture, prayer and communion to remind us of what's important and to lift up people who are signs of God's presence in big and small ways.  Just a reminder that staff are available in the fellowship hall during coffee hour on Sundays and on Wednesday afternoons from 11:30pm-3:00pm in the Jericho room off the hall. As you can see below, we have a lot of opportunities to gather in person and online during the week; I encourage you to continue to connect with one another in these and other ways.

Work on the church buildings continues to go smoothly and the team is ahead of schedule with the removal and drying process. Content removal is almost complete and the sanctuary and adjoining buildings are completed sealed off to facilitate the process.  I receive daily briefings from the director of the team and visited today to thank the large crew who are dedicated to the restoration process. At the bottom I will add a photo of just some of the massive equipment and portable power they are using.

Coming up at St. Michael's Mainland this week:
Men's Fellowship  Tuesday, October 25th at 8:30 a.m.

On October 25 we will discuss voting, a basic right in our country. First we have updated information from Lee County Supervisor of Elections regarding voting places and procedures as a result of Ian's damage. Then we will address broader questions, such as: should Election Day be a national holiday? Should voting be made mandatory, as it is in some countries? This will not be a partisan discussion. This meeting will be via Zoom.

SMAA Temporary Housing update  October 20, 2022

We continue to request HAVES and WANTS among our parishioners for TEMPORARY HOUSING. As we begin to recover and heal from Hurricane Ian, many parishioners have located alternative housing either temporary or long term. Some still have a need.  If you HAVE a spare room in your home, please provide your Name, Address, contact email and cell number and size of space and number of persons you can accommodate. Also, please state whether you will allow pets and how you feel about smokers. If you NEED temp housing, Please state your name, contact email and cell, the number of people in your group and approximately what your anticipated length of stay. (We realize that this will be difficult to estimate, but best guess will be fine.) Please email to: deblarsonrealestate@gmail.com or please text to : 703-966-9474

If you have need of accommodations for a night or two or three while you check on your home. Please text or email Deborah Larson.
deblarsonrealestate@gmail.com  or text :703-966-9474 KC (Kara) Cuscaden will be heading the effort for more long term housing. Please contact Deborah Larson and information will be relayed to KC. We are trying to accommodate our parishioners FIRST (for many reasons). Most hosts who have offered will not accept pets and smokers FYI. If you even have an extra room or a property that survived Ian (condo or home) that could house someone even for a short time, we do have a great need. Snowbirds, if you have not yet returned and your property is available, this is a perfect use for it! Many thanks in advance for your your kindness and generosity. Deborah Larson

wildlife reporting tool and large flocks of birds have returned, gopher tortoises, bald eagles and bobcats among other species and foliage is budding out. I have to say each time I visit the island and talk to those present, I see signs of hope amid the many challenges as well.

The green Sunbelt rig is one of several portable generator units that power the large drying units, which are accomplishing their goal in a measured way to prevent any damage to the wood in the buildings.

Moving Forward Updates from Fr. Bill

Today's Excitement Dear Friends, Today was a day to celebrate! LCEC trucks arrived to install the new meter and energize it so the new HVAC system in the sanctuary can be started up! Then a couple hours later, we passed the City of Sanibel final inspection and we were given the Certificate of Completion; the final step in our permit process which started last May. We are very grateful to Councilwoman Holly Smith, City Manager Dana Souza and all the city and LCEC employees who assisted in these final steps and of course to all the FP workers and their subs for all their hard work these past several months and the Property Restoration Team; the working group was there to receive the good news today. We are very busy getting the spaces ready for opening weekend starting with our 4th Advent services this Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 8am and 10:30am (livestreamed). Then we will have 3 Christmas Services at 4pm, 8pm (livestreamed) and 10:30am. Thanks to the volunteer teams who have been washing dishes in the kitchen, putting books on the bookshelf, hanging wreaths and a 100 other details. It is a stunningly beautiful space and we can't wait for all to experience it again for the first time in 15 months! Bill +
