Prayer Shawl Ministry
“Shawls . . . made for centuries, universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive unconditionally loving God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed....”
Janet Bristow, 1998, co-founder,
with Victoria Galo, of the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

In January of 2008, we began our Prayer Shawl Ministry. These prayer shawls, all unique, have been knitted, quilted or crocheted with love and care by members of our group. Sometimes we start making a prayer shawl for an unknown recipient and then realize we know exactly who should receive it.
Our mission is to reach out to parishioners who are in need of comfort while going through a difficult time such as an illness, surgery, a loss or bereavement. It is our prayer that the recipients of these shawls and quilts will feel God’s love and comfort as well as our love and concern.
We meet once a month to knit, quilt and crochet with prayer, conversation and laughter.
Some members of the group do not attend the meetings but prefer to work at home. The shawls and quilts are blessed on the altar before being given to parishioners by the Pastoral Care Commission and other members of the church. As of April, 2009, 40 prayer shawls have been given.
